Politics and Power
Political organizations govern the way we live and have the power to make decisions on behalf of entire societies. But what political issues are important to our study of sociology and why? Do we really need to understand politics in order to fully understand society? And can individuals in society affect political change? This student-focused book gives readers a clear introduction to the key ideas, themes and debates in political sociology. Combining accessible explanations with critical analysis, the book explores the ideas of classical and contemporary sociologists. It maps out how they have been developed, reinterpreted and evaluated in response to changes in society. In particular, the text also: defines, explores and assesses what is meant by power assesses the modern political landscape and the ideologies of different political parties looks at voting patterns and asks what this tells us about society explores issues of globalization and nationalization and how they have shaped modern-day societiesAs part of the Skills-Based Sociology series, Politics and Power is filled with a variety of tasks, activities and exam practice questions that encourage students to take an active role in their learning. Promoting critical thinking skills alongside development of knowledge, this book is the perfect starting-point for students learning about power and politics in society.

Signals and Systems
time and discrete-time concepts/methods in parallel highlighting the similarities and differences and features introductory treatments of the applications of these basic methods in such areas as filtering, communication, sampling, discrete-time processing of continuous-time signals, and feedback. Relatively self-contained, the book assumes no prior experience with system analysis, convolution, Fourier analysis, or Laplace and z-transforms. FEATURES: Develops continuous-time and discrete-time concepts in parallel highlighting the similarities and differences. E.g.: Ch. 1 on basic signals and system properties, Ch. 2 on linear time-invariant systems, and Ch. 3 on Fourier series representation each develop the continuous-time and discrete-time concepts in parallel. Ch. 9 on the Laplace Transform and Ch. 10 on the Z-transform deal with the two domains separately, but often draw parallels between results in the two domains. Introduces some of the important uses of the basic methods that are developed e.g., filtering, communication, sampling, discrete-time processing of continuous-time signals, and feedback. NEW A companion book contains MATLAB-based computer exercises for each topic. NEW Material on Fourier analysis has been reorganized significantly to provide an easier path for the reader to master and appreciate the importance of this topic. Now represented in four chapters, each of which is far more streamlined and focused, introducing a smaller and more cohesive set of topics. NEW Frequency-domain filtering is introduced very early in the development to provide a central and concrete illustration of why this topic is important and to provide some intuition with a minimal amount of mathematical preliminaries. NEW Relocates coverage of Sampling before Communication. * Allows for discussion of important forms of communication, namely those involving discrete or digital signals, in which sampling concepts are intimately involved. NEW Chapter-end Problems They provide a better balance between exercises developing basic skills and understanding ones that pursue more advanced problem-solving skills. The new edition organizes chapter-end problems into four types of sections which makes it easier for the reader to locate the problems that will best serve their purposes; and provides two types of basic problems, ones with answers (but not solutions); and ones with solutions to provide immediate feedback, while attempting to master the material. The four types of chapter-end problems are Basic Problems with Answers. Basic Problems. Advanced Problems. Extension Problems.

Gender and Culture
The idea that respect for cultural diversity conflicts with gender equality is now a staple of both public and academic debate. Yet discussion of these tensions is marred by exaggerated talk of cultural difference, leading to ethnic reductionism, cultural stereotyping, and a hierarchy of traditional and modern. In this volume, Anne Phillips firmly rejects the notion that ‘culture' might justify the oppression of women, but also queries the stereotypical binaries that have represented people from ethnocultural minorities as peculiarly resistant to gender equality. The questions addressed include the relationship between universalism and cultural relativism, how to distinguish valid generalisation from either gender or cultural essentialism, and how to recognise women as agents rather than captives of culture. The discussions are illuminated by reference to legal cases and policy interventions, with a particular focus on forced marriage and cultural defence. No-one should assume that the choices women make about their lives are forced on them by oppressive and patriarchal cultures, and governments should be wary about leaping prematurely into protective mode. A focus on women's agency can, however, lead to complacency, understating the cultural and other pressures operating on them and the sometimes urgent need for (even paternalistic) protection. The debate on this continues.

States and Power
States over the past 500 years have become the dominant institutions throughout the world, exercising vast and varied authority over the economic well-being, health, welfare, and very lives of their citizens. This concise and engaging book explains how power became centralized in states at the expense of the myriad of other polities that had battled one another over previous millennia. Richard Lachmann traces the contested and historically contingent struggles by which subjects began to see themselves as citizens of nations and came to associate their interests and identities with states. He explains why the civil rights and benefits they achieved, and the taxes and military service they in turn rendered to their nations, varied so much. Looking forward, Lachmann examines the future in store for states: will they gain or lose strength as they are buffeted by globalization, terrorism, economic crisis, and environmental disaster? This stimulating book offers a comprehensive evaluation of the social science literature that addresses these issues, and situates the state at the center of the world history of capitalism, nationalism, and democracy. It will be essential reading for scholars and students across the social and political sciences.
